Equipment
Walking Places recommends that clients carry a day-pack each with a few essential items for their comfort and safety, such as:
sun-hat
sunglasses
sunscreen
raincoat and over-trousers
warm polarfleece or woollen pullover (essential even in summer)
warm polarfleece or woollen hat.
The best dressed walkers wear shirts made of modern synthetic fibres or wool that move moisture away from the skin, and won’t get cold when wet, unlike a clammy cotton T-shirt. Shorts, thermal long-johns, or lightweight walking trousers are best to wear on the day. Jeans or heavy cotton trousers are never suitable. Cotton socks are to be avoided, as they get very cold when wet, wool or polypropylene socks are best.
Don’t forget any personal medication that you may need to have with you, and for your safety and comfort you will be asked a few questions regarding your current health, to ensure that you have the best possible day. Even the ‘flu a few days prior to your walk could affect you more than you may expect at altitude.
Walking Places has some clothing available for clients to use, including hats and gloves and rainwear.
Sturdy hiking boots are the best footwear to cope with the uneven terrain, and are essential if there is any snow lying on the track. With prior notice, rental boots may be able to be arranged at an extra charge. We will discuss this with you at the time of booking.
Walking poles are becoming increasingly popular, so bring your own, or Walking Places can provide some on the day.
And of course, a camera, with spare film, (or plenty of spare memory), and batteries!
