Whakapapaiti Valley
Spectacularly barren rocky alpine terrain gives way to a tussock grass filled valley. With delicate alpine plants, a river crossing, boardwalks over eerie alpine bog-land, beech forest, and stunning views of Mt Ruapehu, this walk has much to offer, all without having to climb over a mountain!
Starting from high on the road that leads to the Whakapapa Ski field, this track has a nice easy start to arm up, before zig-zagging down to the valley floor. After passing a typical back country hut, the track crosses the Whakapapaiti Stream. Often this can be crossed with dry feet, but that depends a little on the day!
The terrain is fairly easy going, with a fantastic variety of alpine plants and forest.
A good option if the weather is not suitable for high altitude walks.
